The
preferred test for placement at Mineral Area College is the ACT
Exam, which is
administered in October, December, February, April and June of
each year (click ACT link at
left for more details). However, MAC also offers the COMPASS
examination for those
students unable to complete the ACT prior to registration.
The
COMPASS test is an untimed examination taken on computer in MAC’s
Assessment
Center, as well as other satellite locations. You do not need
computer skills to take the test;
it is extremely user-friendly and is less stressful than traditional
paper and pencil tests. The COMPASS is designed to measure current
skills in writing, reading and math; the results are used to select
appropriate levels of the English and Math courses you will take.
If
you are unsatisfied with the results of your test and would like
to retake the COMPASS,
you are welcome to take the test as many times as you wish in
one or all of the three subject areas.

The
fee for the COMPASS test is $15 for two or more of the test subject
areas, or $10 for one test subject area. If you wish to schedule
a COMPASS test, please contact Nancy Crader
at 573-
518-2202. You should arrive at least ten minutes prior to the
start of the test, and bring a
picture ID (required) along with the testing fee, which can be
paid by cash or check.
