The Citizens Police Academy is conducted by the Law Enforcement Academy Training Staff of the Mineral Area College Law Enforcement Academy. It is a free course designed to familiarize citizens with various aspects of community law enforcement.

The Academy's team of instructors is made up of actual law enforcement officers and other specialized personnel who provide in-depth discussions and demonstrations about their individual areas of expertise. The Academy curriculum retains all of the core elements essential for citizens to gain a better understanding of police operations. As a result of their participation, citizens are able to make more informed judgments about their police department and its daily operations. Law enforcement also benefit from the Citizen’s Academy because it allows us to gain a better understanding of the views and concerns of our community. Our goal is to foster lasting relationships with members of our community and to create real partnerships with them that will enable us to work side-by-side on future projects to achieve mutual goals.

The Citizen Police Academy will be held once a year and consists of three-hour blocks of instruction conducted weekly over an eight week period. Classes will be held at the Mineral Area College Law Enforcement Academy (MACLEA) on Tuesday evenings from 6:00PM until 9:00PM (unless otherwise instructed).

Graduates of the program will receive a certificate of completion.

The Citizens academy will be held at the Mineral Area College Law Enforcement Academy, located on the Park Hills Campus in the Public Safety Building, unless otherwise noted.

Qualifications:

The Mineral Area College Citizen Police Academy participants are selected by the Director of Law Enforcement Training through an application process. Applications can be obtained at the Mineral Area College Law Enforcement Academy or by following the link below. Potential candidates for the Citizen Police Academy must meet the following criteria:

  • A minimum age of 18 years old
  • A resident or business owner of one of the following counties: St. Francois, Washington, Ste. Genevieve, Madison, and Iron.
  • No felony convictions
  • No misdemeanor convictions within one year of application
