  Programs of Study

What is Programs of Study?

The primary purpose of Programs of Study is to provide successful student transitions between scondary and postsecondary education. The Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act of 2006 called upon states and local education agencies to create secondary-to-postsecondary sequences of academic and career education coursework that lead students to attain a postsecondary degree or industry recognized certificate or credential. At a minimum, Programs Of Study must:
  • incorporate and align high school and college/post secondary education elements;
  • include academic and career and technical education content in a coordinated, non-duplicative progression of courses;
  • offer the opportunity, where appropriate for high school students to acquire college credits; and
  • lead to an industry-recognized credential or certificate at the college/postsecondary level, or an associate or baccalaureate degree.

Why Programs of Study?

  • Smoother transitions for students as they move from high school to college education and into the workforce.
  • Keep students on track and from derailing from their career plans.
  • If students stay on track, parents will not waste money on tuition and become frustrated.
  • Teachers at the high school and college levels can collaborate on curriculum, methods and desired outcomes of instruction.
  • Students who have goals are more likely to achieve their goals and invest in their studies.
