  Educational Talent Search

The Mineral Area College Educational Talent Search program is a TRIO program funded with a five-year, $950,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education. This represents 92 percent of the program cost. The remaining eight percent is funded by Mineral Area College.

Talent Search is one of five programs established by Congress to help low-income, first-generation students who have the potential to succeed in higher education. These programs are referred to as the TRIO programs. There is no cost to the student or their family to participate in the Educational Talent Search program.

Education is the key. ETS is a program designed to help students use that key to unlock their potential.

The No Child Left Behind act is a national mandate to improve educational achievement for all students. President George W. Bush stated that "We believe education is a national priority and a local responsibility... Clearly, our children are our future, and, too many of our neediest children are being left behind."

ETS is one of the federal programs whose purpose is to improve the educational achievement of our youth. ETS helps students define educational and career goals, and offers practical assistance such as tutoring to help students reach their goals. ETS also provides assistance in obtaining financial aid to make those goals a reality. Services are available to youth between 12 and 27 years of age who reside in the target school districts. The program is especially designed for students of families with low income or students whose parents have not received a four-year college degree.

Every child brings to the world a unique combination of skills and personality. Society needs a blend of all those skills. ETS works with students to help them find a path that fits their individual interests and abilities, and to begin the journey down that path. Students may join the program in the sixth grade, and continue in the program through high school graduation. The goal of ETS is for students to graduate high school and enter the postsecondary institution of their choice.
