Tobacco-Free Policy

Effective: August 1, 2015

TITLE: Tobacco-Free Policy

RATIONALE: Mineral Area College is committed to providing its students, employees, and visitors with a safe and healthy environment. In view of this commitment, the college is a tobacco-free institution. No consumption of tobacco products will be allowed on any college property or in any college facility. The institution displays notices of the tobacco-free policy at all college locations.
Mineral Area College tobacco-free policy will be implemented August 1, 2015. Some of the reasons this policy was adopted are as follows:
• Presence of underage students
• Tobacco products littering the campus
• Exposure to second-hand smoke at building entrances/exits
• Desire to ensure clean air for all who come to the college
• Provide healthy environment in which to work and learn

POLICY: Mineral Area College recognizes its role in promoting and maintaining a tobacco-free environment. Enforcing a tobacco-free policy is possible because the college places value on individual responsibility and leadership. As such, every member of the Mineral Area College community shares equally in the responsibility for adhering to and respectfully enforcing the tobacco-free policy.

SPECIFICALLY: Consumption of all tobacco products will be prohibited on all properties owned or leased by the college including but not limited to facilities, buildings, parking lots, common areas, vehicles, and athletic areas.  Tobacco use is prohibited at all meetings, conferences, performances, athletic events sponsored by Mineral Area College.

Smoking means inhaling, exhaling, burning, carrying or possessing any lighted tobacco product.  Tobacco products include cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, snuff, chewing tobacco, smokeless pouches, any form of loose-leaf, smokeless tobacco and the use of electronic cigarettes or any device intended to simulate smoking (unless the simulated-smoking device is used as part of a college-sanctioned, theatrical performance).

MONITORING: This policy will be enforced by Mineral Area College Campus Public Safety Department with assistance from the Administrative Council.  It is the responsibility of all members of the college community, as well as visitors to the college, to inform others and observe the policy.
