As former state representative and current Deputy Director of Missouri parks, J.C. Kuessner will speak during Mineral Area College’s 4th Friday luncheon October 28. Kuessner’s remarks will include an overview of Missouri's state parks system and its accomplishments in 2011.
J.C. Kuessner, lifelong resident of the Missouri Ozarks, was born in Poplar Bluff and raised in the small community of Winona located in the Ozark Hills.
After graduating from Winona High School, Kuessner attended Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield before being drafted at the beginning of the Vietnam era. He served in Korea with the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1966. In 1969, he and his wife, Patti, began a business venture, Kuessner Inc., which they owned and operated for 40 years.
In 2002, Kuessner was elected state representative of his home district which included the counties of Shannon, Washington, Iron and Reynolds. He served in the Missouri Legislature from 2002 to 2010. During his time in the Missouri House of Representatives, Kuessner was a strong advocate for the many state parks in his district, including Johnson’s Shut-Ins, Elephant Rocks and Taum Sauk Mountain.
During his four terms, Kuessner served on the following committees: Appropriations for the Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Conservation, Transportation, Transportation Infrastructure, Health Policy, Professional Registration, Crime Prevention, Tourism. He was chairman of Forest Products Utilization and co-chairman of the Missouri Sportsman Caucus. While in the legislature, Kuessner also served as assistant minority leader for Democrats in the House. He is currently the deputy director of Missouri State Parks.
