READING SHORT FICTION covers writers and cultures from around the globe, from oral traditions of tales around campfire up to current writers and thoughts of today. We will read and discuss over 40 authors, many whose names should be recognizable to all college students. There will be reading, class discussion, writing assignments (both formal and informal), and class presentations, as well as periodic quizzes and at least one major test. This course offers students the chance to become better, more informed readers who can see beyond the obvious with discernment, insight, and logic learned from studying different cultures, genders, time frames, and points of view, all of which broaden and enhance one’s ability to connect with the world.
