PLEASE NOTE:  All tests must be started one hour before closing (see Hours of Operation above) and a valid photo ID, driver's license, school ID, work ID, etc., must be presented to Learning Center personnel in order to take a test.

Developmental Classes, Non-credit Courses
The Learning Center offers the following developmental courses:

    • Arithmetic Skills
    • Elementary Algebra
    • Basic Writing I and II
    • Reading improvement
    • Vocabulary development
    • Study skills
    • Introduction to Accounting
    • Introduction to Medical Terminology

The math, basic writing, reading, vocabulary, and study skills courses are designed to prepare students for college-level courses. Introduction to Accounting and Introduction to Medical Terminology are intended for students who want a broad overview of the subject before enrolling in the college level versions of the courses.

Each module is a one (1) credit hour class, and unless noted otherwise, counts towards a General Studies degree only. Enrollment is by student choice or as determined by a placement test.

Credit Courses 

The Learning Center also offers three one hour courses that will apply towards an AA degree: 

    • MAT-100-A, Metric Measurement (1 credit hour)
    • ENG-100-A, Writing a Research Paper (1 credit hour)
    • ENG-105-A, Use of Library Resources (1 credit hour)
 

Students work on all of the above courses independently under the guidance of the Learning Center instructors. Regular attendance is required, one hour per week for each one hour course. All courses begin the first week of each new semester. Refer to the appropriate course syllabus for more information, for specific assignments, and for the deadlines for submitting work.

The Math Lab
Instructors in the Math Lab offer personalized assistance to all Mineral Area College students who need help with any aspect of mathematics from Arithmetic Skills through Calculus. In addition, the Math Lab has computer tutorial programs and videos that supplement the instruction.

The Math Lab is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Limited math assistance is available Monday through Thursday evenings.

The Writing Lab
Instructors in the Writing Lab are available to any Mineral Area College students who need assistance writing papers. This includes Basic Writing I and II, English Composition classes, and other course writing assignments.

The Writing Lab is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. or by appointment. Limited English assistance is available in the evenings.

Testing in the Learning Center
Students enrolled in telecourses and some independent study classes report to the Learning Center to take tests. Students are strongly advised to read the relevent course syllabus and check with their instructor for specific instructions for these classes.
