Mineral
Area College has a DESE-approved teacher education program including
the above mentioned core for each major. Additional electives
are necessary for each major, and the science, humanities, social
sciences, behavioral sciences and mathematics courses may be different
for the same major depending on the college to which a student
intends to transfer. Because individual requirements vary greatly
by major and transfer institution, it is best if students consult
Diana Stuart early in their program to discuss their career pathway.
Other items of note for the program include the following :
- Students must complete and pass a background screening
as a part of the program.
- Students must take EDU2040 Foundations of Education first,
but only after they have completed fifteen hours of general
education.
- Students must take English Composition I before
taking Foundations of Education.
- Foundations of Education is a pre-requisite class for all
education courses except EDU 1100 or EDU 1300.
- Students should be encouraged to keep copies of all assignments,
especially in education classes, as they will be needed for
the students to complete their portfolio at the end of the program.
- Students should take the C-BASE exam the semester BEFORE they
intend to graduate. Students must pass the C-BASE with a score of 235 in order to receive the AAT. Some institutions require a higher score for admittance.
- Students transferring to certain institutions must have appropriate
ACT composite scores. Most colleges that require a composite
ACT score for admittance to the teacher education program expect
at least a composite score of 22.
- Students should take EDU 2600-- Portfolio Evaluation the semester
they graduate.
- Graduate with a 2.5 GPA with no grade lower than a "C" in the major, including education classes.
