Painting by James F Wilson

The art program at Mineral Area College is an extensive and aggressive program developed with both traditional ideas and some more contemporary influences.  It is designed to motivate the student's creative talents while preparing him or her for continuation in other colleges or universities.  Upon completion of the program, the art student should have a strong portfolio which could be presented to any art department in the country, and possess the basic skills required to complete art endeavors within the community.  Instruction on semi-abstract designs, figure drawings, large black and white drawings, and figurative and abstract color paintings are included.

Mineral Area College art students have the opportunity to participate in interdisciplinary projects with the Theatre and Music Departments, such as painting backdrops up to

20' x 30' in dimension.  Some of these pieces are completed in as little as one week, making the student very aware of the processes for producing large scale artwork.

Students are also able to display artwork on campus in a hallway gallery near the art studio and in the lobby of the Fine Arts Theatre, and to meet with modern and traditional visiting artists.

Mineral Area College art instructor Jim Wilson was recently featured in an article in the Daily Journal regarding his recent trip to New York City for a showing of his work in a Manhattan gallery he helped to found. You can view an online version of the article on the Daily Journal website.

More information on Mr. Wilson and his artwork is located on the Art Faculty page.
