Each Spring the Science Department hosts the WYSE Academic Challenge for this area. The Academic Challenge is a set of competitive tests prepared by the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering ( WYSE ) organization. This competition has been operating in Illinois since 1975, and this will be the seventh year that MAC will host a regional competition.  The 2008 Regional Competition that was to be held Wednesday, February 13, 2008 on the Mineral Area College Campus was cancelled because of bad weather conditions.  A virtual competition was held this year so that the participating schools and students could advance to the next level.
