(5/8) Sharp-shooting Steve Kerr from Millington Central (Memphis, TN) Inks with Mineral Area College. Kerr led Millington Central High School to a 15-15 record during his senior campaign, averaging 17.8 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1.2 steals a game. Steve was a true shooter shooting over 50% from the field, 37% from downtown, and 77% from the free-throw line. He made 90 three-pointers last season, compared to 50 made threes for Cards leader Jerwin Callaway. Kerr lit it up playing against a solid Memphis-area schedule, scoring over 30 points on four occasions last season. Steve grabbed many honors last season, earning an All-Region VII AAA selection, Runner-up District XIV AAA “Player of the Year," and “Best of the Preps” for Large Schools in Memphis. (4/29) Korey McDaniel becomes the third transfer to Ink at Mineral Area College. McDaniel, a 2006 graduate of Cuba High School (Cuba, MO), will transfer from Missouri Baptist University. McDaniel spent last season in the varsity rotation for the Spartans, and in four games against JUCO competition he averaged 32.5 points and 7.5 rebounds. He averaged 23 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists a game during his senior season at Cuba High School, where he was named All-Conference and All-District. McDaniel Press Release
(4/21) Mineral Area College Announces Signing of DI transfer Kevin Johnson from UWM.
Kevin “K.J.” Johnson is a strong and athletic 6’5” 240 lb. power forward has transfered from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He was a standout performer on back-to-back Illinois AA State Championship teams at Simeon High School. Kevin averaged 16.6 points and 7.4 rebounds a game during his senior season, helping his team to a 30-2 record. The Wolverines captured the Chicago City Title, a Conference Championship, a Regional Championship, the Sectional Championship, and Class AA State Championship under IHSA “Coach of the Year” Robert Smith. (4/16) Jerwin Callaway inks DI Letter of Intent at Northern Illinois University. The Cardinals leading scorer (13.4 PPG) will take his hot shooting (50 made 3FG) to the Division I level next season. Callaway was a MCCAC All-Conference and NJCAA Region XVI All-Region selection in his only season at Mineral Area College. The Marshall HS (Chicago, IL) graduate will be moving back to Illinois for next season. Northern Illinois University is a NCAA DI affiliate of the MAC (Mid-American Conference) located in DeKalb, IL. "Jerwin Callaway is one of the best three-ball shooters that I saw ," NIU Head Coach Ricardo Patton said. (3/1) Cardinals end season in Region XVI Tournament Semi-Finals with a 77-60 setback to the Grizzlies from MSU-West Plains. MAC trailed 40-25 at the half, mounted a furious second half comeback, but couldn't overcome the hot shooting Grizz. Barry Wellington led the way in his final game with 15 points, 3 steals & 3 rebounds. Kyle Hubbard added 9 and Sean Scott added 8.
(2/25) Mineral Area led for 30 minutes at Sedalia, but let the Roadrunners snatch a win away from the Cards in final 10 minutes. The Cardinals led 34-32 at the half and built a comfortable lead in the second half before State Fair mounted a furious comeback. The Roadrunners ended the game on a 37-7 run to earn a 87-70 win behind Sanijay Watts' 26 points.
(2/21) Cardinals hit Century-mark with 100-63 MCCAC Conference win in St. Louis. Mineral Area earned their third Conference Championship in four years with the win over Forest Park that moved them to 5-1 in MCCAC play. Jeremy Felton had a game-high 24, Jerwin callaway added 19 (5 3FG), and Marquis Young added 12. Byron Pickens and Marcus Scott hit double figures, scoring 11 & 10 respectively. MAC grabbed a 49-30 half-time lead, and outscored the Highlanders 51-33 in the second half to earn the win.
(2/18) Cardinals upend Region leading Three Rivers in a statement game with a 23 point thrashing in front of packed house at MAC Homecoming. The Sechrest Fieldhouse was rocking as the Lady Cards and Cards both won big over their Conference & Region rivals from Poplar Bluff. Mineral Area knocked off their third ranked opponent with the 68-45 win over the #19 Raiders. MAC led 39-28 at the half behind Jerwin Callaway's strong performance (22 points & 7 rebounds). Jeremy Felton added 11&6, while Gerald Fulton chipped in 8.
(2/14) Mineral Area stays in MCCAC Conference Championship hunt with a 103-67 win over visiting Florissant Valley. The Cards started the game with their pressure defense leading to easy buckets and ended the game knocking down their eleventh 3 pointer of the night. Marcus Scott led the Birds with 19 points, with Kyle Hubbard and Barry Wellington chipping in 16 each. Jerwin Callaway added 13 and Gerald Fulton finished with 12.
(1/28) Cardiac Cardinals play in eighth straight game decided by single digits, extend winning streak to four with 67-63 win over State Fair. MAC survives eight ties, seven lead changes, and a missing Head Coach Corey Tate to move to 16-6 (3-1). Mineral Area was led by Barry Wellington with 15 (8 in final 4 minutes), Kyle Hubbard 12, Marcus Scott 11, and Jerwin Callaway added 10. "We needed everything to get this win, even some technology," commented Chad Kish. He was referring to recieving a text message at half time from Coach Tate who was listening to the game on J98 while recovering from pnemonia. The improved Roadrunners wouldn't go away as Nnaili scored 25 and Sanijay Watts poured in 22.

Mineral Area nips Meramec (St. Louis, MO) in dramatic fashion with a 77-74 win in OT.Kyle Hubbard hit a buzzer-beater 3 pointer (5 points) on a pass from Barry Wellington (6 points) at the end of regulation for the Cards. Ryan Lawrence (5 points) grabbed an offensive rebound of Sean Scott's (5 points) shot with 1.8 seconds left in OT and finished a 3 point play with the stick-back and free-throw. MAC was led by Jerwin Callaway (15 points), Marcus Scott (14 points & steal with 15 second left in OT), and Brandon Hall (8 points). Meramec was led by Billy Brandenburg with 25 points. The Cards are now 15-6 and 2-1 in MCCAC Conference play.
(1/23) Mineral Area College has announced the signing of Oregon State University transfer Mike Stovall. The Marshall High School (Chicago, IL) standout decided to become a Cardinal after a semester in the High-Major Pac-10 Conference at the NCAA DI level. Stovall, a 6’5” guard, was a key component in the Commandoes back-to-back 3rd Place finishes in the Illinois State Championships. He led Marshall with over 20 points a game and added 8 plus rebounds and 4 assist a game during his senior season. Stovall Press Release
(1/22) Mineral Area College grabs early lead and never let go with a 74-66 win over pesky Greyhounds. The Cards trailed Moberly Area CC early on, but built a 36-25 half-time lead behind Marcus Scott's 8 points in the frame. Moberly scratched within 3 points on a bucket from Chris Allen (game-high 20). But, back-to-back 3 pointers from Barry Wellington (team-high 15 points) helped MAC stay on top for good. Jerwin Callaway added 12 points (all in the second half) and Gerald Fulton continued to add another scoring threat with 12.
(1/14) Cards end 3 game road trip against nationally ranked teams with 79-76 win over #10 MSU-West Plains. The Grizzlies entered the game 18-1, but dropped their Region XVI opener to the battle-tested Cardinals. Mineral Area led 30-26 at the half, and scorched the nets in West Plains by shooting 83% in the second half. MAC was led by Jeremy Felton with 20, Gerald Fulton added 16, Marcus Scott chipped in 14, and Barry Wellington hit double-figures with 10.
(12/17) Mineral Area goes 1-1 in Willie Little Memorial Classic in Chicago, IL. The Cardinals led Malcolm X (Chicago, IL) 42-29 at the half and held off a feisty come-back attempt 82-75. Jerwin Callaway led the way with 21, Marcus Scott added 14, Byron Pickens 9, and Kyle Hubbard 8. Mineral Area trailed Kennedy King College (Chicago, IL) 67-59 with 3:20 left, but mounted a comeback to get within a point at 73-72 after a Barry Wellington steal. The Cards had two scoring opportunities in the final 10 seconds, and dropped a tough loss to the Statesmen 75-72. Marcus Scott led the way with 25, Jerwin Callaway added 11, and Jeremy Felton chipped in 10. The Cards head to break at 11-4.
(12/10) Cardinals use 17-0 run in first half to declaw the Cougars in Rawlings JUCO Classic at Meramec 79-57. Mineral Area trailed 3-0, then used their trademark pressure defense to take a 17-3 lead over Highland (Freeport, IL). The Cards led 41-22 at the half and the lead ballooned to 30 in the second half. MAC used a balanced attack led by Jerwin Callaway and Kyle Hubbard with 13 points each. Sean Scott chipped in 12, Byron Pickens added 8, and Marcus Scott netted 7. The win pushes the Cards to 11-3 on the semester, winning five in a row and 8 of their last 9 with two games in Chicago on tap before the break.
(12/8) Neither rain, sleat, nor the visiting Cyclones could deter the Cardinals in the St. Francois County Rotary Shootout. Mineral Area jumped to an 8-0 lead, led 45-20 at the half, and cruised to a 93-44 win over Moraine Valley (IL). Mineral Area was led by Ryan Lawrence with 16 points & 11 rebounds and Brandon Hall with 15 points (3 3FG). Every Cardinal scored in the contest: Callaway 14, S. Scott 12, Wellington 11, Pickens 11 (6 blocks), Counts 6, Fulton 4, and Hubbard 4.
(12/3) Counts has career-high as Cardinals light up the scoreboard against Missouri Baptist University JV. North County HS graduate Nick Counts poured in 28 points (11 2FG, 1 3FG, 3/3 FT) to lead MAC to a 124-57 route over the visiting Spartans. Gerald Fulton notched 23 for a career-high and Byron Pickens added 22 for the third Cardinal on the day with career numbers. Ryan Lawrence added 16, Brandon Hall 14, and Jeremy Felton chipped in 10 as six of the nine Cards dressed hit double-figures.
(11/23) Cardinals knock off #1 Cincinnati State 82- 66 after trailing big early. Mineral Area jumped on the Surge quick, leading 9-2. But, the Cards offense went south and Cincy State controlled most of the first half, leading by as many as 17. MAC cut into the lead with their trademark defense and cut the lead to 37-32 at the half. Mineral Area finished the game strong outscoring the Surge 50-29 in the second half. The Cards were led by Jerwin Callaway with 14, Kyle Hubbard tallied 11, Ryan Lawrence & Marcus Scott each added 9, and Jeremy Felton scored 8 in the balanced attack.
(11/11) Cardinals sweep South Georgia Tech Classic (Americus, GA) with a 87-68 win over the host Jets. Mineral Area College (3-1) grabbed a 20-4 lead early behing Jerwin Callaway's hot hand (20 points & 6 rebounds). But, the feisty Jets (2-2) wouldn't go away, closing the gap to 5 in the second half. Jeremy Felton had a break-out game with 16 points and 11 rebounds, Eric McCrary (5/6 3FG) added 17 & 5, and Kyle Hubbard chipped in 13 & 5.
(10/17) Cardinals are recognized in NJCAA Pre-Season poll at #26 Nationally. Mineral Area starts another season in the pre-season poll, looks to climb as season opens. The #26 Cardinals recieved the second highest ranking in Region XVI behind #6 Three Rivers and ahead of MSU-West Plains (RV). The Mineral Area schedule includes a heavy-weight battle with #7 Southwestern Illinois on Wednesday, November 14 at MAC. The Cards will be facing a tough national non-Region schedule including: #2 Cincinnati State (OH), #9 STLCC-Meramec, #12 Highland (IL), #18 Vincennes (IN), Abraham Baldwin College (GA) RV, Bevill State (AL) RV, John A. Logan (IL) RV, Southeastern Illinois RV, Lewis & Clark (IL) RV, and Southeastern (IA) RV.
(10/20) Mineral Area College Assistant Coach Chad Kish has Article Published in Winning Hoops. Chad Kish is no stranger to writing headlines and stories as the Sports Information Director at MAC. He has several articles published in on-line journals, an article published in the Missouri Journal of Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (2005) "The Impact of Positive Motivational Techniques by Coaches on the Achievement Levels of Men's Junior College Basketball Players," and now is featured in Winning Hoops. His article "Quick Hitters Shred Zone Defenses" will appear in the November/December 2007 issue of the Basketball Coaching Journal.
(9/13) Men's Basketball Personal Development Program Getting Rave Reviews. The MAC Men's Basketball Coaching staff implemented a Personal Development Program this year designed to help educate their student-athletes about a variety of topics. "We believe that this program will help our players develop good life-long habits and help reflect our character standards here at MAC," stated Assistant Coach Chad Kish. The student-athletes had 15-30 minute seminars daily over the first several weeks of the semester on topics such as: Planning for Academic Success, Injury Prevention and Nutrition Guidelines, NJCAA Regulations, Drug & Alcohol Prevention, College Life 101, Residence Hall Living, Financial Planning, Community Involvement, Student-Athlete Code of Conduct, Character Development, among others. "This is a great way for students to start their college career, this information is valuable for their sucess as young men," commented Head Coach Corey Tate.
