SYLLABUS
PRE-CALCULUUS and TRIGONOMETRY
Summer 2008
Gary L. Rawson
This class is designed to give the student an overview of PreCalculus and Trigonometry, a course in higher mathematics. Emphasis is on main topics of trigonometry as well as conic sections and sequences and series. “Mastery” of these topics is not possible in the time allowed for this summer course, however, the student will be introduced to these topics and will attain skills which should prove to be very helpful when enrolled in a full Trigonometry course. To attain and maintain proficiency in trigonometry, it is necessary to practice fundamental skills. Precocious and Trigonometry, like algebra and geometry, are considered a part of the language of mathematics, and as such, is a vital part of life. A strong foundation in mathematics is required for the student to experience success in this class. This class is primarily designed for juniors and seniors.
The major objectives of this class are to familiarize the student with certain topics of mathematics that are traditionally taught in Pre-Calc and Trig and to allow the student to gain insight to the fact that these topics are necessary tools for success in higher level mathematics and science classes. Strategies and techniques will be covered for solving problems involved in these topics. At the end of this class the student should be able to more easily succeed in a one or two semester PreCalc /Trig class. These topics include the following:
Conic Sections, Arithmetic and Geometric Sequences, Arithmetic and Geometric Series, Trigonometric functions; Graphing trig functions; Right triangles and basic identities; Oblique triangles; Trigonometric identities; and Inverse trig functions
Students are expected to:
Attend and participate in all class sessions;
Complete all assignments;
Participate in all tests and quizzes;
Participate in pre, post, and final exams
Class participation, homework scores, pop quizzes, and tests will determine grading.
