Course Description:
English a composition course. The basic aim of this course is to improve students' skills in writing. Throughout this five-week course, students will explore a variety of composition, including a personal narrative essay, a personal philosophy essay, a persuasive essay, and a research paper. The topic of each will have a “my life” theme.
Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
Follow the steps of the writing process.
Develop an effective thesis statement.
Write for a variety of purposes/audiences.
Write according to standard English conventions.
Expectations of Students:
Students will be expected to work diligently during class time, as well as on all homework assignments. All essays are to be turned in on time, and students will occasionally be required to share their writing. Students are also expected to respect their instructor, their classmates, and Mineral Area College at all times.
Student Evaluation:
Students will be evaluated according to their performance on each essay. Each essay will be scored using a pre-determined scoring guide. Other factors will include (but are not limited to) class participation, journal writing, and any quizzes that may arise. The West County grade scale will be used to determine letter grades.
