PARK HILLS -- Every day, a nurse helps someone we know. It may be a child, a neighbor, a family member or a friend. Because Mineral Area College’s nursing graduates staff many of our region’s hospitals, clinics, and physicians’ offices, it’s likely a MAC nursing graduate has been one of your health care providers.

The college’s Licensed Practical Nursing and Registered Nursing programs have celebrated a combined 93.9% pass rate for its graduates over the past seven years. As the need for nurses grows, MAC continues to be an important provider of nurses in our region.

For these reasons, Mineral Area College Foundation elected to raise funds to support MAC’s Nursing Department. The Nursing Department’s Sim-Man mannequin tops the list of 2009-2010 Enhancement Grant equipment purchases.

Allied Health Department Chair Teri (Vineyard) Douglas, MAC alumna 1977-78, said that training with the state-of-the-art Sim-Man enables the Allied Health students to transition to the labor market with top-notch skills.

“Sim-Man provides realistic clinical simulations and teaches problem-solving which benefits our students,” she said. The Sim-Man breathes, sneezes, vomits and even has open wounds and irregular pulse rates. This innovative mannequin enables students to identify health problems in clinical settings before tackling real life emergencies."

"The Enhancement Grant continues to make good sense," said Brad Cooper, MAC Foundation president and 1986-88 alumnus. "The first benefit is simple: MAC gets $3 for every $1 we raise. Second, students train on current equipment and enter the labor market as better-trained employees making a nice transition for employers. Finally, our entire community essentially benefits because the Enhancement Grant brings our state tax dollars back to our local communities. So, the Foundation views the Enhancement Grant as a powerful and smart way to raise funds while investing in our area’s health care."

Flat River Junior College alumni Dr. N. Gayle Simmons and Rowena (Brown) Simmons extended a special thankyou to those who participated in their special incentive match during July and August.

"The phenomenal response to our Enhancement Grant incentive exceeded our expectations," says the couple. "We’re exceedingly pleased with the support from alumni and friends of the college. We are inspired to know alumni care to give back to their alma mater and hope they continue their support. We extend a personal heartfelt thank you to everyone who generously supported this wonderful opportunity."

Enhancement Grant giving is easy. Simply make checks payable to MAC Foundation and mail it to P.O. Box 1000, Park Hills, MO 63601. For additional information or credit/debit card payments, contact Peggy Ropelle (573) 518-2114 or Julia Goggins at (573) 518-2261; or e-mail PeggyR@MineralArea.edu or JGoggins@MineralArea.edu, respectively. Enhancement Grant gifts will be accepted until Feb. 28, 2010.

Time Is Running Out! Great Gift Giving Option to Help Favorite Charities

Those who are 70½ years old or older have an unprecedented opportunity to help MAC or another favorite qualifying charity with an IRA rollover. Time, however, is running short. Action must be completed before Dec. 31. For the 2009 tax year, Congress extended legislation for qualified charitable contributions from Individual Retirement Accounts to charity, often called "Charitable IRA Rollovers."

You may contribute if:

*You are 70½ years or older at the time of the gift.
*Your IRA gifts total $100,000 or less for the year.
*You transfer funds directly from your IRA to a qualified public charity.
*You transfer the gifts outright to one or more qualified public charities. (This excludes gifts made to charitable trusts, donor advised funds, gift annuities and supporting organizations.)

Your benefits:
*The gift generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction on your federal income tax return, so you receive the benefit even if you don't itemize on your tax returns.
*Distributions may be in addition to or fulfill any charitable giving pledges you have already planned.
*You can witness the good that comes of your generosity.
