(PARK HILLS) – Now that winter weather has arrived, Mineral Area College is reminding students to sign up for MAC Alerts, the college's new text-and-email feature that issues timely notices about closings, cancellations, emergency events, and important admissions news.

MAC had been using a free texting service before, but it has been phased out. (Sign up at the link below.)

Current students and MAC employees are automatically signed up to receive emails via MAC Alerts. But they can register to receive text notifications, too, by logging into their Regroup account, accessible from the “MAC Alerts” link on the home page, and entering their cell phone numbers.

Community members – such as civic group members that regularly meet at MAC, and parents—can sign up to receive notifications by also visiting the MAC Alerts link on the home page.

“We encourage students to sign up for text messaging because it is the quickest way to receive closing and emergency notifications,” said Gil Kennon, vice president of college affairs.

Notifications of school closings and delays will still be broadcast over local radio stations, some TV stations, the Daily Journal website, and MAC’s website and Facebook page.

The most commonly used messages during inclement weather closings and delays are:

“MAC is closed,” which means classes are cancelled and all offices are closed.

“Classes at MAC are cancelled,” which means classes are cancelled but offices are open.

“MAC will be operating on a late schedule due to inclement weather,” which means the campus will open and classes will begin at 11 a.m. Should this happen more than twice in a semester, morning classes before 11 a.m. will be made up at a later date. Offices are generally open at 8 a.m.

Notification of dismissal for evening classes will be made to the same media after 3 p.m.
