Question to ListServ:
When using file exchange, is it possible to use the features of Word to provide comments on the document submitted, then return it to the student without saving a copy to the instructor’s hard drive?
We are using version 7.1.1

- Yes I have several professors that do this very often. The comments/reviewing feature of word just save in the same word file, as far as I know the file exchange portlet does not really care what file is sent back to the student (as long as the file type i.e. .doc, .docx, etc is allowed in your mime types on the JICS web server)

- I think the key here is ‘saving’. I don’t believe the file can be commented on and just sent back without saving the file with the new comments.

- I teach composition classes, so I do a lot of tracking changes and returning the corrected copy to students. What I do that I have found helps is save the student’s file to a folder on my computer with the word “corrected” in parentheses in the file name. That way I know what file I need to send back and students know which file they need to open to see my comments. I also set up an assignment early each semester that requires students to return a corrected file to me with the statement “I have read and understand the comments and corrections” at the top. I do this because I have learned that many students don’t know how to retrieve and view a corrected file. I find it frustrating as an instructor when I am pointing out writing problems to students and then see the exact same problems in subsequent assignments. Making them send a corrected file back lets me know who doesn’t know how to do this, and I can address the problem with those students.
