Question to ListServ:

I have an instructor that would like to have students enrolled in cross listed courses have the ability to access both courses in JICS or have a
consolidated forum. I am not aware of anyone finding a solution to this request. We are an EX school using JICS Version 6.4 HF 8F.

• Hi Kevin:

  The solution to this problem is relatively simple and we've done it
  several times. It is a little time consuming, especially with large
  classes, but once the solution is in place, things go well. Make sure
  you have a class roster on hand to work with when you start the process.
  We most recently set this up for two education courses, one undergrad,
  the other a grad level course.

  1. Go into the first of the two courses and through content manager, go
  to permissions and add a new role to the class, named as the "students
  of --------".
  2. Using the class roster, populate the new role with the members of the
  second course, then set permissions for the new role to access the
  necessary material. Once that is all set and saved, exit the content
  manager
  3. Go into the second class, then content manager, permissions and
  create a new role named for the students of the first class. Populate
  that role with the students of the first course, save and exit.

  The students from the courses can then access the other course through
  the search option. One other note, this procedure works well for tutors
  who need access to course material of the students they are tutoring,
  grad assistants and others who are not registered for a class but for
  some reason need access.

• Rod's solution is how we do it, too. However, to have a consolidated forum we only set permissions of one class to access the other - not both ways.
  
  Class A contains all the course content and forums (this does not work for assignments.) In Class A I add a role for Class B students and populate it with the Class B students. Set permissions for Class B students to view all the pertinent pages of Class A.
  
  In Class B, I set a link to Class A so Class B students enter their own course but can easily pop over into the content and forums in Class A.
