Question to ListServ:
Can a professor re-open a file exchange coursework assignment for an individual student if the prof wants the student to resubmit their uploaded file? I have a prof who says that he had been able to do that in the past and it cleared out the current file so another could be uploaded in its place, but we couldn’t re-create that in my office. I don’t know if it’s a feature to be able to do that with a bug that won’t allow it, or just not a feature.

- I do it by going into the assignment for the student, then clicking on Re-enter grade/feedback and deleting the grade. The you can reopen the assignment on the right side of the screen. We are on v6.4 SP2 HF7D

- This can be done, but the student will have to delete the old file and add a new one. Open the coursework assignment and change the grade to “blank” instead of whatever it is. Then go to the right-hand side and reopen the assignment (with or without an extension of time.)

- The prof did that, but when he reopened it he said the old uploaded file should have been deleted and it wasn’t. That’s the part I’m not sure about.
- Once the file is uploaded, it seems the student can’t delete it. I logged in as a particular student to see if I could delete an uploaded file and it wasn’t an option. Should it be?
from Joy D. Flanders <jdflande@centralmethodist.edu>
- That is correct. When he reopens it, the student then has the option to delete the old file and put a new one in it’s place. The file doesn’t just disappear when the exam is reopened. [I.e., I give exams and the students often have more than 1 file to upload. They upload one, mark it final then work on the next one. I have to reopen the exam for them to upload that 2nd file—because they didn’t follow the instructions that said “Don’t mark as final yet.” Their original file is still there and they can add to it.]

- Students can delete the old file. I'm confused as to why yours cannot. Can you post a screenshot? The instructor can't delete the old file, but the student can. You can also leave the old file there, and simply have the student upload a new one. Once you've opened it up, as previously discussed, they have the ability to upload another file.

- Just learned from Joy that once the assignment is reopened, the student can delete the file. I looked at it from the student's perspective before the assignment was reopened.

- I am sorry to divert this topic. Is there anyway to reopen quiz in the
similar way? You can't put blank in the grade field for quiz. The only
solution I have found so far is using the SQL script and deleting
several tables that store all the previous attempts and grades on that
quiz.
After this it allows you to extend the due date.

- You can reopen a online assignment once. But after that, it's not possible (at least with the buttons given--I don't go mess with the script & tables. YIKES!)
